Prudhoe Front Street Improvement Scheme Newsletter - 14/08/07
Work on a
£600,000 environmental improvement scheme was recently launched on
Prudhoe Front Street.
The Prudhoe
Front Street Improvement Scheme includes the replacement of existing
pavements, installation of coordinated street furniture, planting and
landscaping, replacement street lighting and the complete refurbishment
of the heart of Prudhoe, referred to locally as ‘The Cobbles’. A number
of the existing retail units on Front Street will also be accepting
grant funding to enhance the frontage of their properties.
These works
will give the town centre a modern, clean look. Paving and street
furniture will vary in colour to compliment and augment the surrounding
buildings. A number of exciting pieces of contemporary art will also be
introduced to enhance the streetscape. The project originated from
Prudhoe Community Partnership in the autumn of 2005, when Callum
Sinclair of Metaform Arts and Peter Owens of Colour Urban Design were
appointed to work with a variety of local people to clarify the identity
of the town and the image for the future. It is directly upon this
image that the artist’s work and Front Street Improvements Scheme was
developed.
Enlisting
the support of Tynedale Council, the environmental improvement strategy
was published in the winter of the following year after extensive
consultation with local people and key stakeholders. Project Manager
Summers-Inman, have carried out further consultation with local people
to ensure the scheme meets local needs.
Cameron
Scott, Head of Economic Regeneration at Tynedale Council, said: “Our aim
is to create an enhanced town centre for traders, visitors and residents
to enjoy. Shoppers value a high quality town centre environment as it
helps to keep retail activity vibrant”.
The scheme
has secured funding from a number of sources, including Northumberland
Strategic Partnership, Tynedale Council, Northumberland County Council,
Prudhoe Town Council, Arts Council England, One North East, Northern
Rock Foundation and NEDL.
Preparatory
work commenced in January 2007 with the phased removal of the existing
over-head electricity cables. The relocation of the service under
ground will not only improve the physical environment by removing 15
poles from pavements, but will also stabilise the electricity supply
which is susceptible to interruption.
The
remainder of the works to enhance the public realm commenced at the
beginning of June and are expected to be complete by October 2007.
